Summary:
For the last 40 years, Camp Horizon has had a tremendous impact on the greater Atlanta community, by providing a safe space, love, and support for foster youth of all ages. Driven by a shared goal of investing in the future of our community, our organization along with sponsors and volunteers, have combined to enrich the lives of the bruised and broken hearted.
Camp Horizon serves youth that are currently in or have experienced foster care between the ages of 8-24 years old. As research highlights, a majority of young adults in the United States are reliant on multiple forms of support, including financial support, from their families at least until their mid-twenties and often well into their thirties. However, young people growing up in foster care, those who were removed from their families due to abuse and neglect, relying on familial financial assistance isn’t an option (www.mentoring.org). After being bounced around from place to place, frequently changing schools, communities and caregivers several times in one year, instability is the norm for youth in foster care. They don’t have the benefit of consistent relationships with adults, or even with peers. Our program focuses on future planning career and college readiness; health & well-being-mental and physical health; building relationships-healthy adult relationships; financial literacy-savings, checking and investing; basic life skills ~ cooking, cleaning and washing clothes; and communication-crucial conversations. We are dedicated to providing our youth with love and support and preparing them with the skills and relationships they will need to manage the process of aging out of foster care at 18.
Camp Horizon's programming consists of a weeklong sleepaway summer camp; Leadership Development Program for 12-17 years old; Camp Horizon Adult Mentorship Program for 18-24 years old; and Opportunity Days (educational and enrichment activities, sessions and events).
By supporting our non-profit, you are enabling children, teens and young adults to be empowered, connection to supportive adults, adventure and privilege of a weeklong sleepaway summer camp and access to resources and services to support their healthy development and restoration of dignity and hope. For many, all they know is a life of abuse and neglect, and yet we are able to empower them to make good decisions and lead healthy, productive lives.
Thank you!
