FODAC Keeps people with disabilities moving!
Friends of Disabled Adults and Children (FODAC) began in our founder’s home garage over 37 years ago, with him repairing used wheelchairs and re-issuing them to people in his neighborhood who were isolated due to lack of mobility. A 501(c)3 nonprofit since 1986, FODAC’s mission is to enhance the quality of life of people with disabilities by providing recycled home medical equipment (HME) at low/no cost. Our model is simple: collect used HME that is still in good condition, refurbish it, and re-issue it to those in need. To date, we have repaired and reissued over 50,000 wheelchairs plus tens of thousands of other items, including hospital beds, bath and toileting aids, walkers, pediatric standers and gait trainers, scooters and many more.
Why Our Services are Needed
Our HME program addresses basic health care needs and provides independence and mobility for many who might otherwise fall through the cracks of the healthcare system. FODAC is the primary source of HME in Georgia when families are uninsured, underinsured, or have prohibitively high deductibles. Others find that the wait for approvals from insurance or programs like Medicaid delay their recovery or put an extra burden on caretakers in the weeks or months until they receive a needed medical item such as a wheelchair. Increased mobility and self-sufficiency often prevent complications of inactivity, including social isolation and depression. After receiving HME, many of FODAC's clients report being able to remain active in school, work, and community activities.
About our Home Medical Equipment (HME) Program
85% of FODAC resources are used to support the HME Program, which provides over $10 million in home medical equipment items and services annually in Georgia at little or no cost to recipients. We repair and refurbish used donated items to re-issue to clients for a one-time $25 fee. Last year we provided over 8,800 medical items (such as wheelchairs, hospital beds, walkers) and services that gave our clients mobility, comfort, and independence!
