Fairness for Funeral Consumers—Your Support Makes It Possible

The Funeral Consumers Alliance of Georgia (FCAGa) is an independent advocate for Georgians navigating funeral care. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we don’t accept funding from the death care industry, ensuring we are free to focus entirely on the interests of consumers.

Our mission is driven by one simple goal: fairness. Fair pricing, fair options, and fair treatment for every family.

This Giving Tuesday, we ask you to join us in the cause of fairness. Your donation helps us take bold steps forward in 2025 and beyond.

The Problem: Hidden Costs, Unfair Practices

For too long, funeral consumers have been forced to navigate a system stacked against them:

  • Opaque Pricing: Few industries are more secretive about costs. The price for a simple service can vary by thousands of dollars from one provider to another.

Post Prices Online

  • Inadequate Regulations: The Federal Trade Commission’s Funeral Rule was enacted over 30 years ago but fails to meet today’s needs. Funeral homes are not even required to post their prices online.
  • Vulnerable Consumers: Most families face these challenges while grieving, with little time or support to make informed decisions

Grief, Stress, Tumult...

In the grief surrounding the death of a loved one, it's hard for people to learn about their options for final care of the body of the deceased. This stress is magnified by the bewildering array of costs options presented by funeral homes and crematories. (See Sales Tactics to Beware Of

What We’ve Done

Since our founding, FCAGa has been the voice for fairness in Georgia’s funeral industry.

  • We submitted comprehensive recommendations to the FTC in 2022, calling for pricing transparency, penalties for noncompliance, and regular updates to the Funeral Rule. It was late in the December holidays of 2022 and the FCAGa Officers were working feverishly to wrap up comments on the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Funeral Rule (see The Funeral Rule table below).
  • We maintain a Pricing Comparison Table to help families identify affordable options without visiting multiple funeral homes. This information, compiled by volunteers, is becoming dated and is incomplete. But it is the best guide funeral consumers have about what to expect when they talk to a funeral home. Expanding and updating this directory is a top priority for 2025.
  • Our Planning Tools empower Georgians with practical guidance for meaningful, affordable funeral arrangements

But there’s so much more to do.

The Funeral Rule

As part of The Funeral Rule enforced by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), you have a right to see funeral home price lists, obtain price quotes by phone, and pick and choose those goods and services that you want and can afford. (See Your Rights In The Funeral Industry ) Why isn't this arrangement working?
The Funeral Rule adopted by the FTC more than 30 years ago is inadequate for all stakeholders because of:
  • Changes in the expectations and preferences of funeral consumers,
  • Changes within the funeral industry, and
  • Continual innovations in the technology by which we evaluate our end-of-life decisions.

The FCAGa Action Plan 2025

We have an ambitious vision for the future, and your support is critical to achieving it.

  • Demand Online Pricing Transparency:
    • Advocate for laws requiring funeral homes to publish their General Price Lists (GPLs) online, their website or public sites.
    • Scarcely a fraction of Georgia's funeral homes provide their General Price List online. Check the Pricing Comparison Tables on FCAGa.org
  • Expand Consumer Tools and Resources:
    • Provide enhanced resources for planning Heartfelt Memorials , especially Celebrations of Life, balancing affordability, meaning, and emotional healing after the loss of a loved one
    • Update and expand our Pricing Comparison Tables to include all licensed funeral homes in Georgia. We will need volunteers throughout Georgia to support this effort.
  • Engage elected officials and regulators:
    • Demand funeral prices be published online
    • Mobilize volunteers to contact elected officials on behalf of fairness for funeral consumers
  •  Engage Community Partners:
    • Invite like-minded agencies and businesses to partner with us promoting fairness for funeral consumers
    • Support Community Partners in their programs and projects

Why Now?

The time to act is now. Every day, families are burdened by unnecessary costs and stress because they lack the tools and information to navigate the funeral industry. The work we do—educating families, advocating for policy reform, and promoting transparency—is essential, but it depends on your support.
