Furkids, headquartered in Atlanta, GA, is a 501c3 nonprofit charitable organization that operates the largest cage-free, no-kill shelter in the Southeast for rescued cats and Sadie’s Place, a no-kill shelter for rescued dogs.
Each year, Furkids rescues more than 5,000 homeless and abandoned animals providing them with the best medical care and nurturing environment while working to find them a forever home. More than 900 animals are in the Furkids program today, in the Furkids shelters, 8 PetSmart and Petco adoption centers, and over 600 foster homes in the Atlanta area. Furkids also operates five Thrift Stores, which fund approximately 30% of their lifesaving work.
It all began in 2002.
Furkids came to life with one woman’s determination to save a homeless mother cat and three kittens from being killed because they were homeless. Just 20 years ago, virtually all homeless animals in Georgia were killed—because no one wanted them. That woman saved those cats, and during the next 20 years, Furkids grew to become one of Georgia’s largest no-kill animal rescue, shelter and sanctuaries for homeless cats and dogs, saving more then 55,000 injured, abandoned or soon-to-be-euthanized animals.
Way more than a shelter.
Furkids purchased almost 10 lush acres of property at 5235 Union Hill Road in south Forsyth in 2018, with the goal of providing an animal haven like no other. It began with the land—gently rolling trails, landscaped gardens, ponds, fountains and woods filled with birds, butterflies, fish and wildlife. Furkids saw the land as its own forever home, a nurturing place with large spaces and a healthy environment for Furkids animals; an inviting atmosphere for potential adopters and the community to interact with the furkids; and a peaceful, verdant locale for volunteers and visitors.
A joyous and unique shelter destination.
Not only do the animals enjoy the natural beauty of gardens and water lily ponds of our new Furkids campus, you’ll enjoy visiting too. A stroll through the leafy campus today reveals a large, rustic administrative building and cat shelter, multiple smaller buildings for animal care and housing, an outdoor event space, two large ponds, gardens, patios, waterfalls, fountains, woodland paths, and several acres of undeveloped forest, where visitors are welcome to wander.
Complete veterinary services.
Our facility hosts medically-specific buildings for cats and dogs with a myriad of conditions including FIV, FeLV, heartworms, ringworm and upper respiratory infections. It is our intent to provide each of these animals with the necessary care and support to heal their emotional, physical, and medical needs.
Volunteers of ALL ages!
We couldn’t do what we do without our community of thousands of volunteers. We’re the only shelter that connects kids with animals with our FurTales program and other projects.
Welcoming FIV+ and FeLV+ cats.
Furkids is one of only a few animal rescue organizations in Georgia that intentionally rescues and cares for FIV+ and FeLV+ cats. We accept cats that might be needlessly euthanized if not rescued.
Furkids mission is to rescue homeless animals, provide them with the best medical care and nurturing environment while working to find them a forever home. Furkids heals the whole animal, physically and emotionally restoring their health and their spirit.
Furkids' vision is to create a peaceful, unique destination, carved out of nature, where visitors can walk dogs along a nature trail, play with cats in their indoor/outdoor home, enjoy tranquility in a memorial garden, and all of our animals can experience sunlight and fresh air.
Whats Next for Furkids?
We have broken ground on the next phase of our Destination Furkids campaign, which includes the state-of-the-art Sutherlin Dog Shelter and the fully comprehensive Giaquinto Medical Center, scheduled for completion in Q4 of 2025. These facilities will enable Furkids to more than double our lifesaving work, providing a brighter future for countless animals in need. Your support will help us achieve this transformative vision!
