Cancer is the second-leading cause of death in Georgia. Each day, more than 120 people are diagnosed, with an average of 41,000 new cancer cases each year. Many of cancer’s devastating effects are preventable or controllable—sometimes curable—and always more effectively treated when detected early.
The Georgia Center for Oncology Research and Education is a mouthful, and what we do can be hard to explain. We don’t treat people with cancer, but we bring together those who do, those who research how to fight it, and those who educate and advocate to prevent it.
For many years, Georgians believed “better cancer care was available elsewhere.” Thanks to Georgia CORE’s ability to convene key entities and voices, Georgia is now a national leader in cancer care and research, offers more equitable access to advances in care and support, has seen decreased cancer mortality rates and improved quality of care for patients and quality of life for survivors, and celebrates new clinical and scientific discoveries each year.
Cancer care is multi-faceted, and Georgia CORE drives excellence in cancer care through RESEARCH, EDUCATION & RESOURCES, SCREENINGS & GENETICS, SURVIVORSHIP, & ADVOCACY. The needs of Georgians vary across the state, and care must be tailored to fit those needs. For nearly twenty years, we have leveraged partnerships and catalyzed innovation to attract more clinical trials, increase research, and promote education and early detection to improve the quality of life of Georgians, whether they hail from rural, urban, or suburban communities.
While Georgia has made remarkable advances in cancer care, an urgency to connect needs to resources remains. According to the American Cancer Society, a staggering 1 in 3 people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. To reduce mortality rates and other devastating effects of cancer, we must reduce the barriers that exist between people and great cancer care. In Georgia, this need is particularly critical in rural and underserved regions. That’s where the great work of Georgia CORE continues for the next twenty years: maintaining the focus on the bigger picture of improving quality of life for all Georgians.
Will you join us in impacting lives for generations of Georgians to come?
