The Georgia Sheriffs' Youth Homes works to give our state's most at-risk children the love, security, and structure every child needs to become a mature, successful adult. We provide quality residential care for Georgia's abandoned, abused and neglected children. We provide opportunity for children in our care to live normal lives in a family setting. They participate fully in school including extra curricular activities. Additionally they receive tutoring and counseling to allow them to set goals and to achieve their best. Georgia Sheriffs' Youth Homes serve over one hundred children annually. If they remain in our care at high school graduation, they are given the opportunity to attend college or technical school fully supported by our program.
Located in Hahira, Lowndes County, Boys Ranch was the first Georgia Sheriffs’ Youth Home. With over four hundred acres of beautiful woods and fields, Boys Ranch is a peaceful, welcoming setting for our residents. Boys Ranch serves boys and girls and offers a chapel, study settings, a cafeteria, two ponds, a pool and pool house and four cottages. In this beautiful and welcoming environment, our youngsters have plenty of room to explore, learn and develop.
The pastures and meadows of Cherokee Estate near Dalton in Whitfield County provide a peaceful, beautiful setting for the young ladies who live there. Our 100 acres in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains say “home, sweet home” to the girls. The campus has been welcomed by the community, and volunteers contribute in everything from tutoring, to building a playground, to providing holidays and celebrations with the staff and young ladies. Cherokee Estate has a barn, three cottages, a chapel, lakeside pavilion, and gymnasium. The residents are encouraged to participate in activities at school, church and community groups. Each young lady is encouraged to develop into a “whole person,” secure, capable and ready for the next phase of their lives!
Herrington Homestead near Swainsboro came about in 1994 with the generous gift of the Herrington family property by Miss Nina Herrington, Mr. Frank Herrington and Mrs. Ruby Herrington Drew. The 700 acres of beautiful, verdant farmland has been developed over the years to include a chapel, three cottages, gym, a pool and pool house and spaces for outdoor play. Youngsters at Herrington Homestead find themselves in an inviting and lovely environment with caring house parents and staff members. The staff also maintains the Herrington Family Cemetery on the grounds of the property. The nearby community of Swainsboro provides plenty of opportunity for friendly interaction and involvement. The boys and girls at Herrington Homestead are involved in local schools, churches and the community life in Emanuel County. This farming community allows the boys and girls to learn about and appreciate the beauty and value of our natural environment.
The nearby MountainView campus near Chatsworth is the most recent addition to the Youth Homes family. Considered the partner campus to Cherokee Estate, MountainView is home to boys from the surrounding north Georgia area. The residents are housed together in one cottage with room to study and gather, and they are delighted to find room to roam and explore the rolling fields and woods when their studies and chores are complete.
In 1986, Mr. Joe Young left his 2,400 acre estate in Troup County to the Georgia Sheriffs’ Youth Homes. The property with beautiful rolling hills, lakes, and barns opened its doors to the first residents in 1991. Over the years, the property has been developed to include two cottages, an office, gym, chapel and a pool with a pool house. A portion of the property was developed as Camp Pioneer, a more rustic environment for connecting with nature through camping and rope courses. This venue is also used by other groups for special events and programs.
