Love Beyond Walls is a non-profit organization in Atlanta that has served people experiencing homelessness for the past 6 years by providing visibility, shelter, community, grooming, and support services as stepping-stones towards self-sufficiency. Love Beyond Walls is focused on providing services to underserved communities and those experiencing homelessness through our various programs. Through these focuses, Love Beyond Walls has given food, hair cuts, school uniforms, suits, laundry services, and overnight stays to over 90,000 people in need. Our investment in improving the quality of life for people in poverty and experiencing homelessness serves 230 people and families each week. These initiatives lay the foundation for improved self sufficiency in our footprint.
We also provide visibility to those experiencing homelessness by sharing their stories and creating empathy in our community. Love Beyond Walls created The Dignity Museum which is a traveling museum that shares the stories of the forgotten, while presenting the unjust causes for the disparity in resource allocation. In partnership with the Center for Civil and Human Rights, the Dignity Museum can be found outside the center. The stories of those who were born into poverty, those who became homeless as adults, the kids holding cardboard signs at the stoplight, and their collective fight to beat their circumstances. Through interactive technology, research, storytelling, exhibits, and thought-provoking questions, visitors will confront their ideas of homelessness and what it takes to escape it. The museum is designed to take the guest through a journey to promote a hopeful future of equality, opportunity, and justice.
Currently, through our Love Sinks In initiative, we are protecting the homeless from COVID-19. This global pandemic has impacted the homeless community drastically due to the aging population, lack of access to basic necessities, preexisting health conditions, inability to shelter in place, and low ability for general wellness care. Per the United States Government and the CDC’s recommendation of best practices for COVID-19 prevention, hand washing is at the top of the list; however, individuals experiencing homelessness do not have access to soap and water. Love Beyond Walls is meeting this need by placing, rotating, sanitizing, and replacing hand-washing stations in areas where they are needed most.
