The National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) was founded by Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune in 1935, later lead by Dr. Dorothy Irene Height for many years. NCNW is comprised of 37 national affiliate organizations. We are dedicated to leading, developing, and advocating for African American women, their families and communities. We fulfill this mission through research, advocacy, and national and community-based services and programs on issues of health, education, and economic empowerment. NCNW is a 501(c)3 organization celebrating 87 years of service this year.

We outreach to more than four million women around the world. Our National President & CEO is Shavon Arline-Bradley and Dr. A. Lois Keith is the National Chair. Greater Atlanta was chartered on March 20, 2016 with 210 members, the largest chartering section in the history of NCNW.

The causes we are supporting this year are; The Carrie Steele Pitts homeless Shelter, Atlanta Public Schools Harper – Archer Elementary STEM programs and Sex Trafficking.  Please find information on each cause below.

Carrie Steele Pits Homeless shelter for children.  CSPH is a private, nonprofit and non-discriminatory child caring agency that provides community-based child welfare services including supportive education, health & wellness programs and 24-hour, state approved residency for vulnerable youth. We work with Carrie Steele Pitts Home year-round holding trunk parties and sending care packages to students who are going off to college. Some of the students have shared with us that they have never had a trunk/luggage and especially a trunk full of all of the items they will need for the school year.  It’s a joy to provide their needs and show them love and support.

Sex/Human trafficking, a “modern-day slavery,” is the second largest criminal enterprise in the world — second only to the drug trade, according to the nonprofit Out of Darkness.  Every month, 7,200 men purchase sex from a minor, accounting for more than 8,000 sex acts. Another study by Georgia Cares claims that more than 90 percent of Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking victims in Georgia were enrolled in school at the time of their exploitation.  It’s not just downtown where a lot of crime happens, either; sexual exploitation occurs in affluent neighborhoods across the state and the nation.  According to The Schapiro Group, which conducted research on prostitution and sexual exploitation, 65 percent of men who purchase sex with female children in metro Atlanta live in suburban areas.  These stats are from a Voxatlanta.com article.  NCNW Greater Atlanta finds this unacceptable and are doing our best to make improvements for our girls/women to be and feel safe.

Atlanta Public School System’s newly formed Harper - Archer Elementary School STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) programs.  Like many schools, the students at Harper - Archer live in a high-poverty neighborhood, and their needs are not always met. We agree with APS that every child, regardless of zip code, deserves to attend a great school. STEM occupations continue to seriously lack minority representation, and therefore STEM partnerships are needed more than ever in schools that serve minority and low-income populations.  At Harper-Archer ES their goal is to expand the hearts and educational priorities of our scholars. One of the educational priorities is STEM.  NCNW Greater Atlanta is delighted to play our part to positively impact their future.
