ABOUT THE BREMAN
Weaving Jewish History through Everyday Life.
We are arts and history. We are story keepers and story seekers. We are ATL and Jewish. We are the Breman: a cultural center that celebrates the joy and resiliency of life, connecting people from every walk of life. From engrossing conversations about the Holocaust and Civil Rights to captivating art collections and live musical performances, we welcome you to get inspired by remarkable moments and memories.
Our mission is to connect people to Jewish history, culture, and arts.
WHAT WE DO...
JEWISH ARTS & CULTURE
Through art, music, dance, and other forms of artistic expression, The Breman connects audiences to Jewish history, culture, and arts through creative experiences. We celebrate Jewish contributions to culture through music programming, art and history exhibitions, programs, book talks, and more. There is always something happening at The Breman whether it is performances featuring world-class talent or dynamic personalities presenting their newest endeavors.
HOLOCAUST EDUCATION
The Lillian and A.J. Weinberg Center for Holocaust Education at The Breman offers a broad range of age-appropriate educational programs pertaining to the Holocaust.
As Holocaust knowledge declines, education is more important than ever. The alarming results of a recent survey have underscored the urgency of our educational mission. The survey that was conducted across all 50 states, shows that as we move further from the events of the Holocaust, our work to teach future generations about Holocaust History and the dangers of unchecked hatred and anti-Semitism could not be more important.
Two-thirds of young Americans - between the ages of 18-39 - did not know that six million Jews were murdered in the Holocaust, and over half thought the death toll was under two million. Even more disturbing is that one in ten believed the Jews to be responsible for the Holocaust and 15% believe that holding Neo-Nazi beliefs is acceptable.
ARCHIVES
The Ida Pearle and Joseph Cuba Archives at The Breman offer unique services to the community by making collections easily accessible to students, teachers, scholars, and genealogists. Within the archival holdings, you can explore thousands of manuscript and photograph collections, and hundreds of artifacts, textiles, and oral histories. This substantial collection consists of approximately 175 linear feet of material, 6,000 photographs, and 150 oral histories all pertaining to Savannah and the greater Chatham County Jewish Community from the 1750s to the present. Whether it’s family papers, business records, organizational records, rabbis' papers, or synagogue records, the Archives are here to serve your research needs.
EXHIBITIONS
For over twenty-five years The Breman has created or has featured exciting exhibitions that include History with Chutzpah, Ruth-Marion Baruch Retrospective The Guiding Hand: The Barr Foundation Judaica Collections, among others. All of these exhibitions tell a story about how Jews contributed to the world or how Jews interacted with history. Our exhibitions attract people of all backgrounds who are curious and want to learn more about Jewish history, culture, and arts.
